NewsI'm a coach! As of March 28 2008, I've changed careers. I'm now a full-time independent coach and consultant for game developers using agile. You can find all the information on that at www.clintonkeith.com. The website is still under construction and changing hosting services, so if it happens to be down, you can contact me directly. GDC 2008 slides: I've uploaded PPT and PDF versions of my 2008 GDC presentation here:
About Agile Game DevelopmentThis site is a collection of information about applying Agile Methodology to the development of video games (mostly focused on Scrum). Agile Methodology focuses on an iterative and incremental approach to the creation of games. Most games are developed in phases...a design phase is followed by a prototype phase, followed by production and then an Alpha/Beta phase at the end. This approach assumes that if we create a big document and plan and develop to that plan, we can create a game that not only meets its budget, schedule and scope, but also be fun. My experience has been that we don't really answer the important questions with documents. The only real proof of the value of your design idea is the actual running game. Since we really don't see the game running until the end (when it's too late to change our design), the quality of the game suffers. Not only that, but the uncertainty in budget and schedule leads to chronic crunch time. At High Moon Studio we are exploring how to manage large game projects using Agile. We feel that we have stumbled onto something very worthwhile. Sharing this knowledge is useful because better games at lower cost will grow our entire industry. BlogI've created a blog to discuss the presentation and AGD in general. Here's a link to the RSS feed. Links (& People)Noel Llopis, who heads up the R&D efforts at High Moon has been a great collaborator for exploring Agile at High Moon. Noel's efforts have been focused more on the Extreme Programming side. Noel's team has introduced Test Driven Development to the company and he and others present their findings at GDC and other venues in and out of the industry. His website Games from Within, is an excellent resource for game programmers. Mike Cohn has been our "Agile Coach" since 2004. We wouldn't be half as far along on Agile without his contributions. He has written some great books on Agile and teaches various classes. His website Mountain Goat Software also has a lot of great info for people starting Scrum. Ken Schwaber is "Mr. Scrum" in my book. Not only is he one
of the originators of Scrum, but he is the voice of what Scrum is. Ken's
efforts to keep Scrum simple have held back the typical evolution of process
(from small to large) which would ruin Scrum. Ken teaches a
Certified
Scrum Master class that is fantastic (I attended in 2004). Conchango's Scrum Master
